NASA is about to collide with an asteroid with a spacecraft.

a lump of space rock so far from Earth that we have no idea what it looks like.

One of the most metal science experiments ever will take place

when the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) collides with the asteroid at a speed of more than 14,000 miles per hour.

NASA is attempting to alter the trajectory of an asteroid using DART.

It's being described as the first "planetary defence test mission" in history,

a demonstration of our capability to someday prevent a significant asteroid collision on Earth.

DART is initially attempting a more direct way by slamming into it at full speed.
