Widespread internet blackouts in Iran are a significant source of worry.

The outside community struggled to follow the subsequent civilian tragedy

when Iranian authorities shut down the internet in 2019 amid anti-government rallies.

Following an overnight increase of up to 300% in petrol prices

Iranians took to the streets to protest. At the time,

many more people were injured and jailed throughout the four days of violence,

much of it while the nation was plunged into digital darkness .

In a two-week period of turmoil, 1,500 deaths were reported by Reuters in December 2019.
