During the summer, the European Union generates solar power at unprecedented levels.

In the summer, the European Union as a whole produced more solar energy than ever before,

according to a research released on Thursday that revealed the sun provided 12% of the electricity used by member states.

According to a study by the research tank Ember Climate, the EU-27 produced 99.4 terawatt hours (TWh) of solar energy between May and August,

an increase of 22 terawatt hours compared to the same time previous year.

The study's estimates show that the additional solar energy generated is comparable to 29 billion euros of gas imports.

Between May and August, 12 percent of the energy generated in the Union was of solar origin,

Poland used solar energy to generate 8% of its total electricity this year.
